The case for light phones

Most of us grew up carrying a bag of books (and other objects as per our unique personalities) or no bag at all. Our communication was limited to telephones and desktops, objects that were static until their evolution to cordless phones and laptops, respectively. Phones were never meant to be things that we carry around, but now that they are, it makes sense for them to make their physical presence felt as less as possible – by being light.

The problem with some light phones is that the lightness comes at the cost of processing power and a long lasting battery. However, phones are an essential part of our lives currently and are expected to deliver seamless performance and transmission of information without lag, all this and more without dying out in the middle of the day.

Some large phones (often monikered ‘phablets’) can be pushing 200 grammes in their stock format, but, with a custom battery required to power them for processing efficiency, their weight could go up to as much as 300 grammes! A grim reminder of those chemistry textbooks from high school.

Another bar for measuring phone weight is – does it make wearing your loose pants uncomfortable? Add a new belt to the operating costs of your phone. The next thing you know, your phone might not be allowed as cabin baggage on flights.

After all, we should not need Iron Man suits to hold up a phone while browsing in bed. Phones need to be light, slim and able to adapt to us – not the reverse where we adapt to them. Man builds machines to assist himself, not to inspire bodybuilders.

So how much is a phone ideally supposed to weigh? The average smartphone (average in both price and performance) will add 140 grammes to your burden. That is as much as a big bar of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk Silk (worth ₹150). Imagine carrying that thing around in your pocket everyday. Not a delicious idea, right?

Fear not, though. There is one phone that can give competition to a feather. It is light (an understatement) at an unbelievable 110 grammes. So it can give envy to the average metal bracelet watch. We are, of course, talking about the PHICOMM Passion 660. Add to the weight its sleek depth of 7.40 mm and you can see why it is considered 17% thinner than the average 5-inch smartphone.

All said and done, to experience is to believe. So head to Amazon India to experience this phone yourself. We’ll make it easier for you – hit this link and get yourself a super light model… (oops!) Phone.

How the mobile app market in India is set to grow rapidly

The mobile app market in India is rapidly expanding, at a time when the number of smartphone users in India will grow to 382 million by 2016 and the mobile games and applications market in India is expected to be a Rs. 2,700-crore market by 2016. The growing market for smartphones can be attributed to the growth in the number of brands that have come out with their own range of Android OS-enabled mobile phones. In addition, the global popularity of mobile gaming and mobile apps has contributed to building this burgeoning potential market.

Mobile trends have indicated that the smartphone craze won’t die down anytime soon; in fact, it is only increasing day by day as brands come out with much more cost-efficient models rich with lots of features. The reasons for the popularity of smartphones are many. A smartphone is like a personal assistant that you can carry with you wherever you go; an entertainment device, a portable case containing your memories in the form of photos and videos.

Mobile app trends in India lean heavily towards the entertainment category; this includes Bollywood, cricket, mobile games, music apps, instant messaging apps and social media apps. The Google Play store sees a plethora of mobile apps both in the free apps as well as the paid apps category, with some mobile users even opting for in-game or in-app purchases. A look at recent mobile trends would indicate that smartphones are no longer popular only in the metros; in fact, tier-2 and tier-3 cities are a huge market for smartphones that are feature-heavy yet affordable.

In addition, the demographics of the Indian app market is overwhelmingly young Indians in the age group of 18-35. These are consumers who are dynamic, aware, and more likely to switch between brands that are more tech-savvy and affordable for their budgets. This is because it is evident that today, in order to own a smartphone, one does not need to have deep pockets. Technology has come a long way, where the mobile market is extremely competitive. With multiple players coming up with their own innovations for mobile phones, one can get superior quality and excellent features within a reasonable price bracket. This further fuels the mobile app market in India as so many new users keep getting added nearly on a daily basis.

Finally, the most important feature that draws users to a particular smartphone model is its technical capability to run multiple mobile apps and mobile games. Strong tech specs and a superior battery life sound like basic features, but combine these with a great price range and you have a smartphone that is guaranteed to be a hit.

Your phone, your game buddy!

In the present era of smartphones, Mobile technology has taken the Indian market by storm, and it has revolutionized the way we perceive games on the phone space. A critical indication amongst the youth, i.e. gaming is no longer restricted to just Personal Computers and Gaming Consoles; it has transcended to a smarter level of top-of-the-line Android powered mobile games synced directly on to your smartphones, negating the need for huge data mounted on to DVDs and/or a massively supporting device that goes along with it for installation purposes.

Now coming to the matter at hand, how exactly is your phone your game buddy?

Firstly – Portability. Your phone is always on-the-go with you. If you’re bored, all you need to do is get your phone out, browse through the millions of android mobile games on the Play Store, and voila – you’re occupied for the next ‘n’ number of hours playing various adventure, sports and action games.

Secondly – Advanced technology. Your mobile technology has been comprehensively advancing since the initial years of its existence, and presently we have devices running on 64-bit processors (the processors your desktops and laptops run on), powered by lightning fast RAM, transforming them into miniature strikes of thunderbolts.

Thirdly – Extreme graphics. Normally, the compromising factor in most mobile phone games will be the graphics. But in the latest generation of smartphones, this hurdle has been overcome by integrating top notch graphics-oriented software onto their native/non-native games generating a lifelike experience in your mobile device.

Fourth – Variable sensors. Gaming on Android is quite versatile, providing add-on hardware that builds upon the gaming experience, transforming the game-play and integrating it within the device itself. This aspect lets you capitalize on gesture features or enable digital pads which manipulate a similar structure as that on a PC/Gaming console; thereby providing the user a holistic experience which mimics virtual reality.

Finally – Save time. All you need is fast internet and you’re almost done. With every mobile phone game simultaneously being released on the App Store, you don’t need to wait to procure multiple DVDs, download the crack, and install the game to get going.

Supporting multiplayer games is also a cinch, making your mobile phone your ultimate game buddy.
